What a commissioning manager costs, October 2026

Published base salary ranges for US data center commissioning leads and managers run from $93,000 to $200,000 in October 2026, based on four live job ads from three employers that publish pay. The spread tracks scope more than geography. Program-level roles sit at the top and site-level managers at the bottom. Every figure below carries the employer, the exact title, the location, the pay basis, the date we read it and a link.

The figures

Manager and lead roles first, then two senior engineer roles for comparison. “Base” means the ad says the range is base salary. Where an ad does not say whether its range is base or total compensation, we say so.

What the range tells you

Scope sets the pay more than the city. Ramboll’s role runs commissioning at program level, with about half the time spent traveling, and it carries the top of the range. Cumming’s site-level commissioning manager in Dallas starts at $93,000. The two Cumming ads, both in Dallas, show the step from manager to senior project manager is worth about $23,000 at the bottom of the range and about $38,000 at the top.

Base is only part of the cost. Ramboll says bonus or overtime may be paid on top. Stantec says some roles are bonus eligible. Jacobs pays its commissioning lead hourly against the published range, so overtime on a busy site moves the annual figure. Compare offers on the same basis before you compare numbers.

Location tiers matter inside a firm. Stantec advertises the same senior commissioning role at $107,100 to $160,700 in its lowest location tier and $126,400 to $189,600 in its highest. Arizona is not named in any tier, so we do not pair Phoenix with a specific range.

Senior roles are hired nationally. Ramboll lists Arlington but hires across the US. Jacobs lists locations from Corpus Christi to Atlanta and Arlington. If you are hiring at lead or program level, you are competing with employers who will move or fly the right person in.

Why the role is hard to fill

Demand is running ahead of the commissioning teams that bring new capacity online. CBRE counted a record 7,481 MW of data center capacity under construction across eight primary North American markets in the first half of 2026, more than 80% of it preleased (CBRE, August 27, 2026). CBRE also reported that Atlanta has overtaken Northern Virginia as the most active construction market.

The labor side is tight. In Turner & Townsend’s research, 87% of the markets analyzed reported shortages of mechanical, electrical and plumbing trades (Turner & Townsend, July 8, 2026). Its director of global data centers told Data Center Knowledge that commissioning agents and engineers are among the hardest critical roles to fill (Data Center Knowledge, July 22, 2026).

What we left out

We looked for live data center commissioning ads with published pay at Henderson Engineers and HED and did not find one on October 11, 2026, so neither appears. We did not use salary guides that do not show their underlying ads, or any figure we could not tie to a live ad with a link.

In practice

If you are hiring a site-level commissioning manager in Dallas, the published market starts at $93,000 base, and a senior project manager in the same city runs to just under $162,000. A program-level lead who can work across sites sits between $160,000 and $200,000 base before bonus. If your budget is below the bottom of the range for the scope you need, narrow the scope before you open the search, or plan for a longer one.

Questions

What is the base salary for a data center commissioning manager in 2026?
In the four manager- and lead-level ads we read on October 11, 2026, published base ranges run from $93,000 for Cumming’s commissioning manager in Dallas to $200,000 for Ramboll’s program-level role, which hires across the US. Site-level manager roles sit lower in that span and program-level roles higher.
Does base salary include bonus or overtime?
No. Ramboll says bonus or overtime may be paid on top of base, and Stantec says some roles are bonus eligible. Jacobs pays its commissioning lead hourly against the published range, so overtime changes the annual figure.
Do commissioning managers earn more in Northern Virginia?
These ads do not show a clear Northern Virginia premium. The highest range, Ramboll’s, lists Arlington but hires across the US. Location matters more inside a firm. Stantec advertises one role across three location tiers, from $107,100 at the bottom of its lowest tier to $189,600 at the top of its highest.
Why use job ads instead of salary surveys?
A live ad names the employer, the role, the location and the range, and anyone can check it. Surveys pool roles and rarely show the underlying data.
How often is this updated?
We re-read every ad before an update and change the last-updated date only when a figure changes. Ads close and ranges move, so treat any figure older than a quarter as a starting point, not a quote.
