Who we work with
Commissioning, mission-critical and construction hires for data center programs
Kernavique finds the commissioning managers, mission-critical electrical and mechanical engineers, and construction and project leads that data center developers, operators and contractors need to deliver their programs. We run permanent searches in Northern Virginia, Atlanta, Columbus, Phoenix and Dallas–Fort Worth, map who holds a role before you open in a new hub, and benchmark what each role costs from dated job ads. Every search starts with a written brief and ends with named people.

What you are up against
Commissioning holds the handover date
In Turner & Townsend research published on July 8, 2026, 87% of the markets analyzed reported mechanical, electrical and plumbing trade shortages. Its director of global data centers told Data Center Knowledge on July 22, 2026, that commissioning agents and engineers are among the hardest critical roles to fill. A building is not handed over until it is commissioned, so an empty commissioning seat is a schedule risk.
Most of what is being built is already leased
CBRE counted 7,481 MW of data center capacity under construction across eight primary North American markets, more than 80% preleased (North America Data Center Trends H1 2026, August 27, 2026). Preleased capacity has a tenant waiting, which leaves little room for a team still being hired.
The busiest market has moved
Atlanta has overtaken Northern Virginia as the most active construction market, according to CBRE’s North America Data Center Trends H1 2026 (August 27, 2026). Programs in the newer hubs often need senior people who will relocate or travel.
Owners and contractors want the same engineers
Developers, operators and contractors all need mission-critical engineers who have worked on switchgear, UPS, generators and cooling plant. When several programs in one hub hire at once, they approach the same people.
How we help
- Engineering search
Search
Permanent commissioning managers, CxA leads, mission-critical electrical and mechanical engineers, and construction and project leads for a named program. Contingent or committed; we recommend which on the brief call.
- Leadership search
Search
Heads of mission-critical, directors of construction and program-level commissioning leads, run as a dedicated search from brief to start.
- Market mapping
Search
Before you open in a new hub, we map who holds the roles you need, where they work and what would move them.
- Compensation Benchmarking
Advisory
What commissioning, mission-critical and construction roles cost in each hub, with every figure tied to a named employer and a dated job ad.
Questions buyers ask
- Do you work for owners and operators, or for contractors?
- Both. Developers, colocation and hyperscale operators, general contractors and MEP contractors all hire these roles, but the brief differs: an owner’s commissioning lead oversees the work and a contractor’s delivers it. We write that difference into the specification.
- What does a data center commissioning manager cost?
- Published base ranges from live commissioning ads we read on October 11, 2026 run from $93,000 (Cumming, Commissioning Manager, Dallas) to $200,000 (Ramboll, Program Manager, Mission Critical Commissioning). Scope moves the number more than the city. Our Briefing piece on commissioning pay links every ad.
- Can you find people for a site in Atlanta or Phoenix, not just Northern Virginia?
- Yes. We cover Northern Virginia, Atlanta, Columbus, Phoenix and Dallas–Fort Worth, as well as Chicago and Austin–San Antonio, and search nationally for senior people who will relocate or travel. If a hub is new to you, market mapping shows who is there first.
- Do you place people permanently or on contract?
- For data center programs, permanently: Search fills these roles as permanent hires. Our contract practice, Capacity, supplies AI platform engineers rather than site teams.
- How soon will we see people?
- We agree the shortlist timing with you at the brief call, based on the role and the market. The shortlist names real people, with our notes on each.
Terms on this page
- MEP
- Mechanical, electrical and plumbing: the building-services trades and engineering in a data center.
- UPS
- Uninterruptible power supply: equipment that keeps critical loads running through a power interruption.
- CxA
- Commissioning authority, also called a commissioning agent: the party that checks a building’s systems are installed and perform as designed. ACG also issues a credential of the same name.
- MW
- Megawatt. Data center size is usually given in megawatts of power capacity.
- H1
- The first half of the year, January to June.
